The Big One (12-2)

Monday 18th June 2012.

Sutton Stop to Rugby visitor moorings.

There is nothing like being wakened by a whistle of steam - I'm not talking about the kitchen kettle, I'm talking about President and Butty Kildare passing us at 8am. There is a certain smell made by a release of steam that is mixed with smoke. It's a very addictive mixture and once smitten you become a steam junky for life. I am a none recoverable steam junky!

Today we will be joining the North Oxford Canal. It has been three years since our last visit to enjoy this section of inland waterway. Last time we came this way it was mid winter and the trees were bare and the wildlife was quite scarce. On that trip we started at Hillmorton and the wildlife highlight on the first day was a small family group of Bullfinch. Read Here

Our trip along the North Oxford canal was quite uneventful. We had a very steady trip. This did not however stop someone with a small todger from coming out of his pit to complain that we were travelling too fast. But then mooring his boat on a sharp bend after a bridge hole did not help. The engine was on tick over at the time.

One thing that is apparent is how much more overgrown the canal is than when we were here three years ago. Later we caught up with John and Helen on Nb Pyxis once again.

In Rugby we were passed by tug Zulu and butty Rollo.

Wildlife: Goldfinch, Chaffinch and Greenfinch. Coot, Moorhen, Mallard with young and all in good numbers.

Flora: On our travels this year we have noted the following plants at the waterside so far. Common Dandelion, Red Campion, White Campion, Herb Robert, Scabious, Teasel, Daisy, Oxeye Daisy, Yarrow, Mugwort, Tansey, Ragwort, Thistle, Arrowhead, Bluebell, Ramsons, Flag Iris, Honeysuckle, Bladderwort, Plantain, Foxglove, Nettle, Comfrey, Bindweed, Primrose, Hogweed, Hemlock, Ivy, Rosebay Willowherb, Clover, Dog Rose and Bramble.
