Sutton Stop
07:00 The wind is very fresh and cold plus a little bit of rain is being carried along with the gusts. What would best be described as a dark lowering sky with scudding clouds greeted me when I let the dogs out. There is an old saying about the English weather, if you don't like it, just wait an hour. The English do seem to have a fixation for the weather and I include myself in that number.
We did not have to wait long for the sky to get very dark and for the wind to grow much stronger. However instead of the wind being the expected precursor to a heavy shower of rain. This time it was accompanied by a quick burst of pea sized hailstones which before the squall had passed had reverted back to rain once more.
In a country that is blessed with huge amounts of annual rainfall. We should never be in a situation where we have water shortages. However, the problem is of our own making. We manage water very effectively. Almost every road has drainage, which is intended to fast track the water into any nearby water courses. We over drain the land giving little time for the water to soak away.
09:00 Heritage working boats Atlas and Malus passed us at Hawkesbury Junction. They are moving onwards to Braunston for the Working Boat Gathering on (Saturday-Sunday) 23rd-24th June.
11:30 Pandemonium broke out in the middle of a downpour as President, Laplander, Hasty, Emily Anne, Whistle Down The Wind and Adamant steamed into Hawkesbury. A mini-steam boat convention broke out. A number of wet crew were seen to abandon their vessel and head directly for the Greyhound!
A good time must have been had in the Greyhound as the steam whistles continue to be blown from time to time throughout the afternoon. Maybe its something in the water.
