Human Computer Interaction

Technology development between machines and humans know as HCI (Human Computer Interaction) goes on at an increasing pace. Apple has now introduced what it is describing as a revolutionary new laptop. One which as been adapted to make use of the new HCI technology. This is the first in the new core range of Apple laptops. Its a laptop which comes without the need of a keyboard or touch screen interface.  Even the ubiquitous mouse is now a thing of the past.

Wikipedia Quote: 'Human computer interaction researches the design and use of computer technology, focusing particularly on the interfaces between people and computers. Researchers in the field of HCI both observe the ways in which humans interact with computers and design technologies that let humans interact with computers in novel ways'.

As a field of research, Human-Computer Interaction is situated at the intersection of computer science, the behavioural sciences, functional design and media studies. The term HCI was first coined  by Moran, Card and Newell in their seminal book, The Psychology of Human-Computer Interaction. The term connotes that, unlike other tools with only a limited number of uses (such as a hammer, useful for driving nails, but not much else), a computer has many uses.

The first adaptation of HCI is in a new groundbreaking piece of Apple technology. The Macbook Wheel is breaking down the boundaries between the human and the computer. No longer is there a clunky and difficult to use (unless you have typing skills) keyboard between you and the computer. The keyboard is after all a 120 year old design. A design that goes all the way back to the dawn of the first mechanical typewriter.  But even relatively new technology like voice recognition applications, are also being made into a thing of the past.

Welcome to the brave new world of the Mackbook Wheel.
