Many of you will know that I am a fan of football. Not only that, but I am a fan of Manchester United. You may have heard or seen on the news that Sir Alex Ferguson is retiring as Manchester United manager at the end of this season. I could not let the event pass without giving a nod to the great man and his achievements.
Memories I have in abundance. Like standing in silent respect after the Munich disaster which befell the Busby Babes. Standing in a stunned silence at the appointment of managers like Atkinson, O'Farrell and Docherty. Signing the book of condolence at Old Trafford on the death of George Best.
Perhaps one of the best indicators of the greatness of the club and its most successful manager, is contained in my list of outstanding players, playing under Sir Alex. Paul McGrath, Brian McClair, Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Mark Robins, Gary Pallister, Paul Ince, Peter Schmeichel, Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Andy Cole, David Beckham, Gary Neville, Teddy Sheringham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke, Jaap Stam, Fabien Barthez, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Roy Keane, Edwin van der Sar, Carlos Tevez, Nicky Butt, Nemanja Vidic, Robin van Persie, Nani, Chicharito, Rafael, and Park. You may want to add to the list.
In a way I am sad that Alex is going upstairs into the directors box. But for whoever becomes his replacement they will not be standing in the shadow of a predecessor. When Sir Matt stood down as manager we thought it was the end of an era. It proved to be the start of another. I have long thought the David Moyes would be a natural successor. But god forbid that the united board should even consider Mourinho.
Up the Reds.
Later....
