The Big One (22-3)

Saturday the 8th of September 2012

Selby Basin.

A wonderful warm morning turned into a very hot sunny day. I did a few little jobs on the boat - prepare the anchor, chain and warp. We need the anchor ready as we are proceeding out onto the River Ouse in the morning.

A chill out day today for us. So I went for a walk to the Selby Boat Centre and arrived in time to see the gates close.  So I went a bit further down the road and I found a replacement antenna for the FM radio system on sale in Halfords. I just need to route the cable through to the right place. It will be good to have some music back on board. We paid a visit to Aldi for the last few essentials and a pet store to purchase a replacement ball for Poppy.

I was enjoying a little chat with a boater on Nb Throxenby Lady when there was a sudden outburst of hostile banter between a couple of people living in the flats overlooking the basin. All aimed at and intended to intimidate the boat owner who until that time had done nothing to warrant the berating. The language and nature of the slanging was obviously intended to goad the boater into some form of retaliation. To his credit he could not be drawn into conflict. It turns out to be a regular occurrence. It was then that Geoff and Mags arrived with Meg aboard Nb Sayella. It was good to have a bit of a chit-chat and a cup of tea with them. It also allowed the hostilities to die down.

It is surprising the number of people who come down to the locks for a look at the river and the boats in the basin. Poppy was chasing about after her ball on the grass and everyone seemed to be entertained by her acrobatic antics. We were hoping to tire her out so that she would settle down for the evening.

Out for our evening meal with friends Vicky, Sarah and Paul watching the sun go down and having a good laugh. Later I walked back to the boat to get a coat as it turned quite chilly and at the same time collected the dogs. Then went back to collect Mags. Poppy the dog entertained the kids with an impromptu display of her football skills.
