The Big One (16-4)

Sunday 29th July 2012

Birmingham

What a changeable sort of a day. We started out with bright sunshine but with a cool breeze. At lunch time we went out for a Thai meal which was only a few hundred yards from the boat. The meal was a wonderful one shared with daughter Steph and boyfriend Scott. On the way back it started to rain, then it became quite heavy and everyone stood under the shelter of a building trying not to look to wet as everyone was without a coat or brolly.

On our return from face stuffing we decided that it was a day for doing some essential kitchen chores. The main one being to defrost the refrigerator. Over the last few months the thickness of ice has built to the point where we can get very little into the freezer compartment. We have a quick method of defrosting that involves bowls of hot water. It came as a surprise to find that a washing up bowl full of water and ice was the end result. I tipped the water and ice into the canal - the local ducks were somewhat perplexed by the hard bits of floating bread.

Walking through town, one of the big screens was showing what's happening at the various places where the big party is being held in London. It seems that it is not a peaceful event as there were two fellows wrestling with each other and a third bloke kept making them part. On the way back there was some blokes on pushbikes racing along the towpath. A bit later there were another group of blokes sailing up and down a lake with several others. They seemed to be having some fun.
