The Big One (10-5)

Thursday 7th June 2012

Cranfleet Lock 4 to Willington Road Bridge 24.

It was raining when I woke up and has continued for most of the day. Being a miserable sort of day we have pushed on rather than stop after a few hours. I don't mind boating in the rain, we have the pram cover up and that gives us some shelter. However, due to a number of low bridges on the Trent and Mersey canal, we have done most of it with the pram cover down.

I don't understand why they do it, but they do. If it had been a hire boater I could have made allowances. But mooring a boat on an empty piece of canal with hundreds of yards of clear mooring space. Putting their boat next to a tree hanging over and covering more than half of the canal. So bad that boats passing have to steer a slalom course. Then the boater starts getting angry with everyone for passing too close to his boat. A nightmare boater with a similar boat name.

But our journey whilst wet, was quite enjoyable. From Derwent Mouth and then  Shardlow, on to Weston and Swarkestone before halting at Willington. We were playing the property game, where you pick out a place that looks good from the outside and backs up onto the canal. We saw quite a few such properties today. One surprise was the number of boats on the move. However, a large proportion of the boats were hire craft.

Tonight is a night for eating out ... The Green Man in Willington was our pub of choice. Yorkshire pudding, with Beef Chilli and chips. Top fodder for two hungry boaters. Speckled Hen was a guest beer and was very good. Good food, good beer,  at a fair price.

Wood Warbler
Wildlife: Reed buntings and Sedge warblers were everywhere as was the growing number of Swan, Mallard, Moorhen and Coot with lots of young.

A rare glimpse of a Wood Warbler was the birding catch of the day.
