The Big One (25-7)

Wednesday the 3rd of October 2012

Barnby Dun Lift Bridge to Long Sandal visitor moorings.

A cold night was broken by the passing of the Humber Princess this time empty and heading for the port of Goole. At first light there was not a cloud in the sky and it looked as if it was going to be a good day.

The wind was freshening by the time we set off and it was making steering difficult. On arrival at Long Sandal lock, we had to wait for a CART employee to come and drive the lock from the tower.

There has been a problem with the level gauge at Long Sandal lock for some time - CART's answer to this is to put up a permanent notice on the control panel saying there is a problem with the level sensor.

The engineers who turned up spent time feverishly opening and closing the sticking sluice. Several hours and many opening and closing of the sluice later, the problem it seems still remains. Now I hope that's  not indicative of the level of maintenance we can expect from CART for the future.

There is a fairly modern car on the towpath side at Long Sandal Lock. The car has been rescued from the canal. I am not sure if the Biffa skip is intended for the car.

I think that you will agree with me - cars don't float, well not for very long. Last year, when we came through they were extracting a sunken boat in the same place!

I have created a poll that will run between now and the 1st of January 2013. It's not very scientific. Its a simple question "Will CART Succeed". You have three choices Yes, Unsure and No. Now you can vote for one of the three choices. If you change your mind before the poll closing date. You can come back and change your vote. (I wish we could do that for politicians) You will find the poll option on the right hand side just below the members pictures.
