Summer Cruise 2013 (10)

Apperley Bridge to Bingley Five Rise

Even more rain fell overnight and the sky was still overcast but starting to break up with small patches of blue sky showing through by dawn. The temperature picked up during the night as a warm front passed through. It could be a warm humid day today.

Morning: Fixed a problem with the solar panel wiring. A joint in the wiring circuit had been pulled or worked loose. The towpath is a quagmire because of the large number of cyclists. Mountain bikes ridden hard as people cycle into Leeds do nothing for the towpath surface.

Some of the lock are exhibiting leaks that indicate water if getting behind the lock wall. Some locks had small leaks but a couple had very significant ones.  Field Lock three rise and Dobsons Lock three rise show signs of significant amounts of water getting behind the lock structure.

The Idle swing bridge was very difficult, however Buckhill Swing bridge was so heavy that boaters are now pushing the bridge open with their boat. Some of the wooden side plates are broken from the action of being pushed open to pass through. We reported this bridge to CaRT in the late summer last year. We have done the same report again this year. Because people are having to strain even when in groups of three or more. It is only a matter of time before someone sustains an injury. No doubt CaRT will then say that they were unaware of the condition of the swing bridge.

Afternoon: A steady journey following a hire boat. On arrival at Dowley Gap Two Rise Lock, we were met with 6" of water pouring over the lock gates as well as a trickle of water coming down the bywash.  The confused hire boaters had been sat in the lock for a long while trying to get a level in the top lock. I explained that a look over the rear gates would have alerted them to a paddle being open. No harm done.

Evening: Moored up at the bottom of the Bingley Five rise staircase lock.

Wildlife: Dragonflies chasers and hawkers and Demoiselle were abundant, as were butterflies Orange Tip, Comma, Painted Lady and Meadow Brown.
