The Big One (7-5)

Thursday 17th May 2012

Another cold morning but the dogs still wanted to go for a brisk walk. On our return to the boat we decided to walk across Boston and have a look at the other boat access route via Antons Gowt the Frith Bank Drain and the Maud Foster Drain.

The Maud Foster Windmill is quite impressive but we had chosen a bad day, as access into the windmill is very limited. We walked as far as the sluices into the tidal part of the River Witham. Our return was back following the course of the tidal river towards the Boston Stump.

A number of hulks are visible when the tide is out. Vessels of many different sizes and construction. Somehow it seems a shame that they are slowly rotting away. But who knows in a few hundred years from now some archaeologist will rediscover their remains.

Today was meet a BW "jobsworth" day. I don't know why it happens, but it seems that BW employees are selected for their jobsworth abilities. The Memsahib is taking the dogs for a walk and she comes across jobsworth and another person having a conversation.

She was greeted with "What do you want to moan at me about then?" he continued "You can only stay for five days and then you have to pay!" She realised that jobsworth was spoiling for an argument and his attitude was bullying so she chose to walk away.

The locals said don't worry its "micky moaner" he's always like that. The management of the moorings is nothing to do with him other than he has to cut the grass. He moans about everything. However he does like to be officious, stroppy and throw his weight around with the women. He also likes to give an impression to strangers that he is in charge.

Wildlife: Our local swan invited himself for breakfast. Now I don't mind feeding the birds. It brings them up close and I enjoy the interaction. However, "Swanee" as he is known, starts knocking on the boat just after first light. He is quite ancient as swans go (stainless steel ring) and so I guess he has gained some merit in being an old timer.

  1. Ah you had the pleasure of meeting Mickey. Think me and Liam are just about the only people he gets on with other than Steve and Chris on Devocean. We are his "regulars" you see.
