Castleford Visitor Moorings.
Yes, we are still here, the River Aire is still into the red on the guage. Not a lot else to report today, it rained, then the sun shined for a while, the wind went from calm to blustery and back to calm again. We did a bit of clothes washing, hung the items out to dry and the rain started again a short time later. Friends Steve and Sandra called by with a sack of solid fuel as we were running a bit short.
Wildlife, our first Swallow of the year was seen perched on a telegraph wire. Swallows are found in areas where there is a ready and accessible supply of small insects. They are particularly fond of open pasture with access to water.
Just outside of the visitor moorings, on the road into Castleford is a public house called the Griffin. This is a dog friendly pub. Today it was good to have a pint of beer with, Paul and canine crew member Millie on Nb Lamorna. Trevor and canine crew member Bob on Nb Beau. Geoff and the wonderful canine crew member Fred on Nb Mullein.
Some commercial traffic was still moving on the river with a few barges going either way. Later I went to look at the water level gauge. While the water level has fallen on the river, it is still in the red.
However, one boater still went out with his boat onto the river and headed off towards Ferrybridge Flood Lock. I don't know why people want to take such risks. The lock landing point can be seen just starting to emerge out of the water. This landing is on two levels. The second half of the landing is still a couple of feet under water.
