Summer Cruise 2013 (2)

Sir Frank Price Lock to Greyfriars Moorings (24-7-13)

Only a little bit of rain fell overnight, with lightening to be seen off in the distance, but luckily the sound did not reach us.

Morning: We had intended to have an early start after a visit to the shower block and giving the dogs a good run along the towpath. However, our boating companions had problems starting their boat. So it was a delayed start after all. We stopped for lunch at Pastures before continuing towards Mexborough.

Afternoon: Just after Mexborough top lock we found that there are a large number of plastic woven bags about twice the size of a wheelie bin floating in the canal. I had reported them as a hazard to CaRT at easter. Now its mid summer and they are still allowed to continue be a hazard.

Mexborough Bridge we came across a large group of children swimming in the canal. Some were even jumping from the road bridge. There were around ten large bags of polystyrene that had been used to make a makeshift raft. At the bottom lock several large bags forming another raft were blocking the entrance to the lock.

Evening: A quick trip back home was called for. Two hours later and after meandering through village after village (some of which I did not know) we arrived in civilisation. I returned back on the motor scooter as I know I will have to make the same journey tomorrow.

Wildlife: In the section between Aldwarke lock and Kilnhurst Lock we spotted four Kingfishers. Later over lunch we watched a pair of Kestrel's hunting. Later a fifth kingfisher was spotted near Sprotborough Lock.
