The Big One (22-6)

Tuesday the 11th of September 2012

Naburn Lock to Lendal Bridge York.

Overcast sky and occasional rain showers greeted us this morning. Under way by 10:30 and as if by magic the weather takes a turn for the better. Out walking the dog when a military jet aircraft flying very low beat-up the mooring. The old dog is so deaf now she did not even notice!

The cruise up to York was quite interesting one as we passed by many moored up boats. We were doing the old "I like - I don't like" judgement call of colour schemes and types of boat. One did catch our eye it was in several shades of mauve - despite what you might think it did look quite good. However, I don't see Rosie in shades of mauve any time soon!

The wind freshened up as we approached York and mooring up looked like it might be a tad difficult then the wind direction changed and pushed us onto the mooring.  The sun seems to have burnt off the low cloud and the day has gotten better and better.

The cruise boats seem to be doing a roaring trade with the visitors to York. A steady stream of boats have passed by heading upstream. Few have passed going the other way. York has some small self-drive boats available. I was amused to see and hear four adults all dressed as pirates shouting and waving plastic cutlass and wearing tri-corner hats as they passed by. The beer round here must be very good.

A regular stream of gongoozalers out boat watching. The odd ones peering into the boat. However we did get an oriental couple peering in with shaded eyes at the saloon window. I gave them a cheery wave. Quite a look of surprise on their faces as they hurried away.

Poppy made a new friend with a polish couple and their small child. It's true, dogs are good at social introductions and breaking the ice. Most people would just walk on by if we did not have a dog. Having a pooch seems to be pleased to meet us.

Wildlife: Just one fleeting glimpse of a Buzzard and a couple of Dragonflies.
