The Big One (22-2)

Friday the 7th of September 2012

Haddelsey Flood Lock  to Selby Basin.

The wind abated last night around sunset. The storm clouds blew away leaving a dark sky full of stars. Its good to sped some time in the rural areas away from street lights. I did not stay outside for long as the temperature had fallen sharply.

This morning I expected a cold misty start, however whilst it was still cool the sun had burnt off any remains of mist that might have developed. It looks like being a nice day. The sun has got his hat on hip, hip, hip, hooray and all that!

Wildlife: A couple of Mink trotted past on the visitor moorings at Haddelsey this morning. In a very purposeful way they quickly headed off across the corner of a new cut field of grain. They seemed to be animals on a mission. There were a large number of pigeons and other birds feeding in the field and that might be the attraction.

It was a very pleasant surprise to get a knock on the door and find fellow blogger Geoff of Nb Sayella introducing himself. We also met Meg the dog who was given a few tidbits by way of a bribe by the Memsahib. We will be meeting up again in Selby Basin. On Sunday we will be going together through the lock and up the River Ouse, in a mini convoy.

We did a very leisurely cruise up the Selby Canal. It was so leisurely that we were overtaken by everyone walking on the towpath. We were busy spotting pike hanging in the water in the weeded margins.

Wildlife: Dragonflies were out in good numbers. A kingfisher kept pace alongside the boat for about 200 yards as we crept along. He was fishing for small fish that were being disturbed by the passage of the boat. Mags was delighted by the very close up views and the seeming indifference the bird had for us.

We moored before the swing bridge and I checked for space inside the basin. There was plenty of room and we had a choice of moorings. So I selected one where we knew we could get a TV picture.
