The Big One (12-5)

Thursday 21st June 2012

Braunston Puddle Bank

At 4am, a thunderstorm arrived. The rain came down in torrents. By 10am the rain had passed and some broken sunshine came through. By mid afternoon it was quite warm and lots of boats were on the move.

With the inclement weather the Braunston Festival could be a wash-out. We have been here a few days now and there is little sign of the arrival of significant numbers of the historic boats. We had a walk around the reserved moorings and the majority are empty. Talking to an historic boat owner he said that he expected the number of boats attending to be less than half the number that were here last year. Speaking to a number of passing boats, they were not stopping because most of the available space had been given over to the event. This seems to be a chicken -v- egg scenario. No space for cruising boats to stop, however, there were no boats sitting in the reserved mooring area. Its to be hoped that more people come by car and that they don't feel disappointed by the low numbers of historic boats in attendance.

Today was a day for looking for boat insurance and for breakdown cover. I did a number of on-line searches and eventually found suitable cover. A good wet weather task to get out of the way. One interesting point was the confusing systems run by some broker/insurance providers.

I'm trying to insure a Narrowboat and one site insisted on having a value put on the masts and sails? I gave up! In line with car insurance our previous insurance provider had quoted a significant price increase on this years cover quote. Looks like I will be doing the rounds again each year.
